by Chuck Cunningham, Lobbyist There is little dispute that campaign contributions can influence desired political outcomes. After all, money is the mother’s milk of politics. Some special interests buy favor that some politicians are seemingly too willing, and even sometimes eager, to sell. But before you react in righteous indignation over the quid-pro-quo of political giving, consider some of the most well-meaning campaign finance reform heroes have attempted to thwart it, right? The following is an open letter sent this morning to Alabamians, asking for their support for a state bill that would let voters decide if they want out-of-state dark money and/or other illicit political contributions disclosed. People were so excited about Senator Orr's bill, that every phone in our office is being used to call our contacts in the state, and the reaction is overwhelmingly positive - everyone seems to want Senate Bill 356 to be approved.   ---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: John Pudner, Executive Director Take Back Our Republic <johnp@takeback.org> Date: Thu, Apr 21, 2016 at 11:21 AM [...]

Illustrating how widely anger resonates over the role of money in campaigns, former Republican operative John Pudner joined a segment of the march from Philadelphia to Washington last week in northern Maryland. Pudner is former campaign strategist for Rep. Dave Brat, R-Virginia, who unseated House Majority Leader Eric Cantor in the 2014 primary. Now executive director of a conservative money-in-politics group, Take Back Our Republic, Pudner said special interests from corporations to unions drive the country’s out-of-control spending. It’s unlikely that conservatives will support a Seattle-like approach of spending tax dollars on vouchers, he said, adding the a tax-credit plan [...]

How are you planning on keeping the coalition together, and growing and strengthening it for the long haul? First of all I think that we have already taken this huge step in building the coalition. There's a breadth of the movement that's perhaps unprecedented in recent history. The groups have different levels of comfort surrounding direct action, but we're working closely together. If you look at the mobilization as a whole, moving so many groups to get on board is huge. We've consolidated much of the progressive movement's organizations. We're even bringing conservatives in. John Pudner from Take Back Our [...]

Trevor Potter Praises TBOR on BillMoyers.com

Trevor Potter: I don’t know if you’ve talked to them, but there’s a group called Take Back Our Republic. There’s a Republican conservative activist, John Pudner, who’s had years of history in the trenches working for conservative Republican groups, pro-life groups. He was involved in the Brat race against Eric Cantor, and he’s now leading a Republican group that is very concerned about the role of big money in politics, and they look at this and say, you know, for instance, “We’re concerned about foreign money in US elections. How do we know that China or other groups that want [...]

Let’s make our democracy work for the many and not just the few. The Pluribus Project ─ a special initiative with the Aspen Institute ─ is changing the way political campaigns are run and won, so our elected officials work on behalf of broad public interests instead of moneyed interests or angry extremists. Our project is led by a dynamic team of social entrepreneurs with extensive experience at the intersection of politics, media, and technology who came together to address what we see as the defining challenge of our time. Through a rigorous process with leading campaign experts, we have [...]
