Let’s Fix the Scam PAC Problem

July 9, 2019

Political activists are passionate about their causes – right or left, R or D – and, while the era of social media has tainted citizen engagement as disruptive to civil discourse, the reality is that those who are highly involved form the backbone of our democracy. But, sadly, predatorial political operatives and/or con artists have manipulated the system to use those intense feelings for their own gain. They do this through political action committees that claim to be supporting a […]

Political-Industrial Complex Attacks TBOR for Fight Against Gerrymandering

June 25, 2019

The shrill reaction of critics in the political-industrial complex to Take Back Our Republic daring to challenge the redistricting process in Massachusetts are included in this piece in the Talking Points Memo. They are eerily similar to the reaction of the political-industrial complex to this National Review article a year before Take Back Our Republic was formed, when they expressed the same contempt for our now Executive Director’s decision to run Dave Brat against the sitting Majority Leader Eric Cantor. […]

Ted Cruz, AOC have it right on banning former members of Congress from becoming lobbyists

June 17, 2019

One of the biggest problems in our federal government is the concern about elected officials seeking self-enrichment, leading to motives beyond public service that potentially affect policy choices. A lifetime ban on lobbying would certainly be a strong, positive step. The next step is to stop the revolving door that lets them get rich after they finish approving money through legislation for future employers. The system of the haves and the have-nots are at the core of this issue. It’s […]

One state could reshape campaign finance, ethics debate

June 10, 2019

In the 2020 race for president, South Carolina will, once again, be the place that narrows the field from survivors – those who can simply carry on from Iowa and New Hampshire – to real competitors capable of running national campaigns for their party’s nomination. However, with the ever-expanding race on the Democratic side, the feel could be significantly different than even the massive 2016 Republican field. With the number of candidates likely to reach at least the mid-twenties, South […]

Anti-gerrymandering group targets Massachusetts

June 4, 2019

JOHN PUDNER HAS practically unimpeachable conservative credentials as the political consultant who recruited David Brat to run for Congress in Virginia five years ago, but he says he has left his partisan ambitions behind to work on giving the whole voting public a greater say in the electoral system, and his next target is Massachusetts. In Massachusetts, Take Back Our Republic first wants to register people to vote and hear what they think about gerrymandering, the controversial political maneuver that owes […]

Michigan Districts Must be Redrawn

May 30, 2019

A whopping 34 districts must be redrawn in Michigan per a three-judge panel that ruled the gerrymandered congressional and state legislative seats were unconstitutional. Now, the legislature has until August 1 to submit new maps – that would need the approval of the Republican-controlled legislature AND the Democrat governor, Gretchen Whitmer. Should an agreement not be reached, the panel will redraw the districts in time for the 2020 election cycle. Michigan Republicans have vowed to appeal the decision. The ruling […]

Conservative group to push redistricting reform in Massachusetts

May 28, 2019

A national conservative group focused on government reform says it wants to take on gerrymandering in deeply blue Massachusetts. Alabama-based Take Back Our Republic wants to replace the Legislature’s redistricting process with a nonpartisan commission in the Bay State, with the aim of increasing voters’ access to their elected officials, said John Pudner, the group’s executive director. “We’re going to get districts that are much fairer for people,” Pudner said. Take Back Our Republic plans to follow the model that […]
