RealClearPolitics Quotes TBOR on Donor at Presidential Announcement

March 29, 2019

(photo courtesy of State Department, full story from Real Clear Politics here. ) RealClear Politics asked Take Back Our Republic about controversial mega donor Angelo Tsakopoulos hosting an event for Presidential candidate Kamala Harris. TBOR does not take positions on which candidates should be supported or opposed by voters. However, this question gave us a chance to make a distinction between public and transparent donations like this in which voters know who is giving and can decide if that impacts their vote – and […]

Liberal ‘dark money’ groups spent more in 2018 than conservative groups

January 23, 2019

But when it comes to the big-money world of outside spending, over which candidates have little control, it appears that liberal groups had a banner year in 2018. For the first time since the 2010 Citizens United Supreme Court decision, which struck down campaign spending limitations for corporations and unions, liberal “dark money” groups outspent conservative groups, according to a new report from Issue One that analyzed data from the Center for Responsive Politics. Dark money groups spent $150 million in the 2018 midterms. […]

Ex-Governor’s Dark Money Group Raised Big Money

December 26, 2018

We have previously written extensively about the rise and fall of former Missouri Governor Eric Greitens, particularly his use of dark money. Now, we know a little more about A New Missouri, the 501c4 organization built to promote his agenda. Tax filings show that the group raised a whopping $6.1 million from 67 donors. Two of those donors gave $1 million and all gave over the $2,600 maximum contribution. Clearly, the entity was built for the sole purpose of circumventing […]

Midterms Break the Bank

November 15, 2018

The rapid growth of the influence of money in politics continued with the 2018 midterm cycle. An astonishing $5.2 billion was spent on elections that, essentially, resulted in a divided government poised for gridlock over the next 2 years. For conservatives, that money bought, perhaps, the opportunity to confirm more Trump judges. For liberals, that money bought, possibly, the ability to fund the ongoing Mueller investigation. And, meanwhile, the American people are all-the-more sick of politics and $5.2 billion that […]

October 1, 2018

Saturday’s Montana PBS US Senate Debate started with the topic of the day, the Kavanaugh nomination, but ended up focusing on money in politics in a state that could decide the Senate majority. By the time the “Dark Money” segment of the debate started at the 46:41 mark moderators John Twiggs and Anna Rau noted the topic already became a focus before the topic was officially raised. Take Back Our Republic does not support or oppose candidates, but we believe […]

Transparency Victory on Capitol Hill

September 25, 2018

Executive Director John Pudner is on Capitol Hill after a great victory for transparency, and in support of HR1341 to cut off foreign infiltration in our elections through massive unverified credit card contributions. He is pictured above Tuesday morning with Kevin Kosar of RStreet, one of our fasted growing allies, at a forum on the separation of powers and need for Congress to act to represent people rather than defer to judicial activism and executive orders. Pudner commented two weeks […]

US political spending getting more secretive with IRS change

July 20, 2018

Political spending in the U.S. is about to become even more secretive after the IRS this week dropped a requirement that many nonprofits have to provide lists of their major donors. John Pudner, executive director of Take Back Our Republic, a conservative group that calls for election spending transparency, has been pushing for regulations on credit-card campaign donations, arguing that they make it easier to hide foreign contributions. Dropping disclosure requirements for the IRS is a step in the wrong […]
