Reminder: Open Secrets Shows Need to Broaden Donor Pool, Achieve Reform
By TBOR Staff
AUBURN, AL- Usually, we highlight new examples that show possible avenues for reform as well as the intense need. Today, however, we want to remind our supporters of a diagram put together by Open Secrets, the non-profit political money-tracking organization.
Their article on 2010 congressional elections and how they were funded can be found here: https://www.opensecrets.org/resources/dollarocracy/04.php.
This research is important and shows why we believe what we believe. Small dollar donors, ordinary Americans, are being drowned out in the election process. 82% of campaign funding came from wealthy candidates, wealthy donors, and PACs. Only 13% came from small-dollar donors.
Solving this crisis must be a two-fold effort: 1) broaden the pool of donors to begin pushback and 2) achieve substantive reform. It is our mission that elections are decreasingly dependent on the few and increasingly reflective of the population as a whole.
