A weak FEC really contributes to filling the swamp, not draining it.

March 16, 2018

More than a year into his presidency, President Trump has shown little interest in beefing up the Federal Election Commission, the agency that could serve as a key player in his avowed agenda to reduce the influence of moneyed interests on politics. So far, Trump has nominated just one new commissioner to fill the two open spots on the panel. He has the opportunity to name an entirely new slate. The remaining four commissioners are serving on expired terms, two […]

Is Tom Steyer Running for President?

December 1, 2017

AUBURN, AL- We have previously written about Tom Steyer, the liberal mega-donor who is funding an effort to impeach Donald Trump, a campaign short on specifics and long on ideological preferences. Steyer, an uber-wealthy ex-investor whose foremost issue has been the environment, contributed more money, over $91 million, to campaigns in 2016 than anyone else. In fact, he more than doubled #3 on the list. In the HBO movie, “Does Money Talk,” which also includes Take Back Our Republic, […]

Alaska Campaign Finance Law Under Attack

August 17, 2017

States rights, the will of the people, and the ability to achieve local reform is at stake in a case involving our northern-most state. In 1996 the Alaska legislature passed campaign finance reform that, among other things, capped individual contributions at $500 to a candidate. The popular law was raised in 2003 by the legislature to $1,000. However, the voters weren’t having it, and they overwhelmingly voted to return the limit to $500 by a 3:1 margin in 2006.[1] Despite […]

Campaign Finance Issues for HHS Secretary?

July 12, 2017

We have previously covered the campaign finance issues with the recent special election in Georgia’s Sixth Congressional District. Both candidates- Jon Ossoff and Karen Handel- did nothing illegal, but activities surrounding those campaigns embodied rationale for reform. Now, there are concerns about the leader they campaign to replace, Health and Human Services Secretary Tom Price. Groups are launching complaints that the former congressman gave $40,000 from his accounts to America Rising, the pro-Trump group that aired ads and conducted research […]

St. Petersburg Moves to Cap Super PAC Money, Prevent Foreign Influence

June 26, 2017

We’ve covered the movement within local governments to begin the pushback against big money, and St. Petersburg, FL is the latest shining example. The city made a move last week to cap Super PAC money at $5,000 and keep foreign entities from making an impact in our elections. Elected officials in St. Petersburg made the move despite a legal opinion that the law is likely unconstitutional. The lawmakers stated a belief that they could not sit idly by, and they […]

A Study on State Lobbying: Culture of Corruption Permeates Empire State

May 22, 2017

In our study on lobbying, we go on quite the rabbit trail again this week as we look at a culture of corruption in New York. Like our most recent paper on the subject, we understand that we are being somewhat tangential. However, we continue to believe that loose laws and a culture where influence is held by the few leads to other problems. Consider one such example in the handling of stipends given to committee chairpersons. The system, which […]

A Study on State Lobbying: New York Plagued by More than Numbers

May 15, 2017

AUBURN, AL- Last week, we took a by the numbers look at the problems in New York- one of the greatest growth states in lobbying around the country. Sadly, the numbers do not even tell the full story. In the coming days, we will have information on the New York LLC loophole that we have discussed previously. However, there are far more issues in the Empire State.
