White House to look at TBOR Proposal

Josh Earnest concluded yesterday’s White House briefing by telling reporters the White House would take a look at the proposal from Take Back Our Republic to restore the tax credit for small political contributions, as reported by NewsMax.

Veteran reporter John Gizzi of Newsmax asked about the initiative by Take Back Our Republic at the conclusion of Wednesday’s daily briefing, and reported on the reaction.
John Pudner, the executive director of Take Back Our Republic, first presented the idea last May to now-Speaker Paul Ryan in Wisconsin.
Later several members of Take Back Our Republic were well received by many at the Capitol, arguing that Americans should be allowed to keep the first $200 they would have given the IRS each year and instead give it to a candidate they believe would be a better steward of their tax dollars. Since then, 40 Republican Members of Congress signed Take Back Our Republic’s other legislative priority, (H4177 – Stop Foreign Donations Affecting Our Elections), giving it by far the most support among Republicans of any campaign finance reform measure in years.
Pudner noted that the four states with similar tax credit proposals  – Ohio, Oregon, Minnesota and Virginia – averaged more than 68 percent turnout in 2012, compared to a national average of less than 58 percent. He believes that elected officials will focus more on constituents who are more likely to vote AND contribute to political campaigns.
